What is Forest School?
Forest School is a child-centered approach to learning that takes place outdoors, usually in woodland or other natural environments. Such a setting allows children to explore, indulge their curiosity and develop holistically, free from the constraints of a traditional classroom. Over time, this ongoing connection with the outdoors helps them grow in confidence, resilience and independence, while also nurturing creativity and problem-solving skills through supported risk-taking.
The approach has its roots in the Scandinavian idea of friluftsliv - living life in the fresh air. It values the whole child: not just physical skills, but also their sense of belonging and social, emotional, and creative growth. By giving children space to experiment, collaborate and face challenges at their own pace, children develop a deeper connection to both nature and themselves.
